He pursued formal training at the prestigious San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1991 in the specialties of painting and drawing. From the outset, Rancaño positioned himself as an independent yet deeply engaged figure within Cuba''s vibrant artistic scene, developing a body of work that resisted easy categorization while maintaining a profound dialogue with both national traditions and universal artistic concerns.
His aesthetic— often characterized by critics as post-medieval — emerged from a deliberate fusion of the fantastic and the familiar.
