“My evolution as an artist is quite a long process, with situations that repeat themselves throughout my life. From a solo artist I passed to forming a team with Alexandre Arrechea in the nineties. We did two exhibitions together. My evolution is a counterpoint between solitude and collectivity, the space where my work has always gravitated throughout my career. My artistic practice is a kind of narration about emotions, obsessions and changing experiences that I have buried. This practice makes them visible and, in some way, makes them physical.” - Dagoberto Rodriguez Sanchez
Dagoberto Rodriguez: Craftsmanship and reflection underpin the work of Cuban artist Dagoberto Rodríguez, founding member of the renowned collective, Los Carpinteros, and solo artist since 2018. His practice comprises graphic works, installation, video and sculpture, eloquently combining political or social commentary with empathy and wit.
Rodríguez graduated from Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba in 1994. There, he met Marco Castillo and Alexandre Arrechea; they formed an artistic trio in 1992 and two years later had become known as Los Carpinteros. The name itself, meaning ‘The Carpenters,’ references the use of wood and other recycled materials in their early works and also points to a rejection of the division between craft, everyday life and fine arts.
